Start with what goes into the bag—not the artwork
Packaging for baguettes, loaves, pastries and café counter products needs to suit the food geometry and the way staff fill and close each bag. A visually attractive bag can still perform poorly if the opening is too narrow, the paper is too stiff or moisture accumulates during holding.
Before ordering a custom bakery bag, identify whether the contents are warm or cooled, oily or dry, loose or individually wrapped, and how long the product stays inside the packaging.
Packaging formats to evaluate
| Format | Typical question | Buyer decision |
|---|---|---|
| Flat bakery bag | Can the item slide in without crushing the product? | Opening width, length, paper flex and tolerances |
| Gusseted bread bag | Does the expansion accommodate the bread profile? | Base, gusset and fill method |
| Window bag concept | Is a viewing panel necessary? | Film, glue, recyclability claims and legal requirements |
| Printed takeaway bag | Will branding remain consistent after creasing? | Ink, artwork position and print proof |
Materials, moisture and food-contact questions
A supplier should review base paper grammage, surface characteristics and any optional coating separately. Grease resistance is not the same as moisture resistance, and neither establishes lawful food-contact suitability in every destination market.
Ask for documentation relevant to the exact finished construction and its intended temperature, contact duration and food type. A certificate for a management system is not a product test report.
- Specify the actual bread or pastry dimensions and maximum temperature at filling.
- Ask for a physical preproduction sample with the expected product inside.
- Define printed versus unprinted contact surfaces and required test evidence.
- Confirm tolerances, carton packing, labels and delivery market.
Printing and production approval
Artwork, color references and brand layout should be attached to an approved print proof. Also review how folds, gussets and the bag base affect the visible design. Keep an approved physical sample or recorded measurement standard for repeat orders.

Buyer questions worth resolving
Is a bakery bag automatically oven-safe?
No. Serving or carrying paper is not automatically suitable for heating or oven use. Any temperature performance needs construction-specific evidence.
What should we send before asking for pricing?
Provide a filled-bag size or sample, base paper preference, print coverage, estimate of orders, destination market and testing requirements.
Prepare a useful sourcing brief
A clear inquiry gives a supplier the intended use, format, material and testing questions—not just a target price. Include your destination market, drawing or sample, print design, order forecast and acceptance criteria.
