Airline Airsickness Bags: Procurement Specification Checklist

How airline and cabin supply buyers can specify airsickness bag dimensions, lining, closure, fluid testing, printed instructions and packing.

AI illustrative packaging concept — not a manufacturing specification or product certification.

Airline airsickness bags are small cabin consumables, but they should be purchased against a technical specification rather than an image. Seat-pocket dimensions, opening ease, closure, seams and liquid-containment expectations may differ by carrier and procurement program.

Folded and opened dimensions

Record the folded length, width and thickness as well as the fully opened dimensions. If the item must fit a particular seat pocket or literature holder, test it with the actual aircraft interior equipment. Explain the target capacity and any required gusset or base form.

Paper, lining and seam construction

Ask the supplier to identify the paper weight and any barrier or lining. Paper appearance is not sufficient evidence of performance. The bottom seal, side seams, folded closure and any adhesive system should be evaluated under the test conditions agreed with the purchaser.

How to define a liquid-containment test

Rather than asking only whether a bag is “leakproof,” specify the test medium, fill volume, temperature if relevant, hold duration, bag orientation and failure criteria. Testing must reflect the construction that will actually be delivered. A general material report cannot establish the completed bag’s seam performance.

Printing and instructions

Clarify language requirements, branding, instructions, pictograms and mandatory operator information. Review proof placement carefully: ink placement and colors must not interfere with the opening or folding configuration.

Packing and cabin replenishment

The order should state pieces per pack, packs per carton, barcodes, carton marking, traceability and estimated consumption. Packing quality matters when items are stored for long periods and replenished on a cabin-service schedule.

Sample approval and inspection

Agree on an approved reference sample and acceptance checks for dimensions, printing, opening, seams, lining and packaging. Ask whether the buyer’s own tender requires third-party inspection or additional documentation.

Questions to put in an RFQ

  • What are the opened and folded dimensions?
  • What test demonstrates performance under my specified liquid conditions?
  • Which paper and barrier structure is proposed?
  • Which multilingual instructions and print proofs are required?
  • How are the bags packed, identified and inspected?

See our airsickness bag product concept and transportation packaging options. No blanket leakproof rating or aircraft approval is claimed without the buyer’s approved specification and supporting evidence.

Operational acceptance table for airline procurement

A cabin consumable must fit storage locations and function under the specific intended use. Airsickness bag dimensions, fold design, closure and fill performance should be discussed in the same specification. No bag should be described as leakproof unless evidence supports that claim for the finished product and agreed test conditions.

Acceptance topic Data buyer provides Suggested approval question
Seat-pocket compatibility Allowed folded width, height, thickness and packing count Does the approved fold fit the actual pocket or service cart?
Containment target Test medium, liquid volume, dwell time and handling Is the assembled, closed bag tested using an agreed method?
Closure and seams Fold-over, tab or other closure; stress and lifting conditions Are seams and closure checked after the required fill?
Cabin instructions Operator brand, languages, warnings and pictograms Has the correct artwork and mandatory wording been approved?

Scenario: existing bag specification is not automatically transferable

An airline may inherit a sample from another carrier or previous supplier. Even if the open bag looks similar, the seat pocket may be shallower, the fold may be different or the test method may change. Keep an approved reference sample with a revision number and requalify a changed closure, barrier or folded dimension.

Further buyer questions

Can base-paper water resistance prove the whole bag works?

No. A material report cannot by itself demonstrate that the finished bag’s folds, seams and closure meet a defined containment test.

Should airlines request a universal minimum order quantity?

A general MOQ is not established by the supplied records. Ask the supplier to quote a stated construction, packing format and planned consumption.
